When things fall apart in your life, you will experience a lot of emotions that can hold you back, such as grief, anger, frustration and regret.

But the most damaging emotion of them all is fear.

Fear is the emotion that keeps you stuck in the past. Fear paralyzes you. Fear is the number one problem most people face — fear that they’re not going to make it, fear of the future, or fear of what other people think.

Jeremiah had a lot of reasons to be afraid. His job was to deliver a very unpopular message to his nation. He was so hated that he was tossed into a pit, and then his enemies threw rocks down on top of him. He recorded his cries to God in today’s verse. Jeremiah was afraid, and in his fear he turned to God; he called on God’s name.

If you are battling fear in your life today, God says the same thing to you that he said to Jeremiah: “Do not fear!”

God is in control and will get you through whatever you’re facing. He will get you out of the pit in his perfect timing. So ask God to relieve your fears.

There are three antidotes to fear:

  • Fill your life with the truth. “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). The more you fill your mind with God’s Word, the more it will drive fear from your life.
  • Fill your life with love. “Perfect love casts out fear …” (1 John 4:18). The more you get to know God, the more you will understand his unconditional love. As you understand his deep love for you, you will see that his perfect love drives away your fear.
  • Fill your life with faith. As you begin to trust God and his perfect love for you, you will begin to overcome your fears. Faith is God’s antidote to fear.

If you are afraid that your life has fallen apart and your best days are behind you, you’re wrong. God can always turn things around. He sent his son, Jesus Christ, to “seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10).

No matter what you’re going through, no matter how bad your circumstances appear, turn from your fear and expect Jesus to restore your life.

Pray this prayer of Jeremiah: “Restore me, O Lord, and bring me back to you again! Give me back the joy I once had!” (Lamentations 5:21).

God will not only use your gifts to fulfill your destiny, he’ll also use your limitations.

Let’s look at Esther.  She had several big limitations that made her perfect for the role God wanted her to fulfill. She was an orphan adopted by Mordecai; she was a minority, a Jew living in a Persian country; and she was a single woman. A single woman in a male-dominated society had zero rights.

And God used all of these things, along with the gifts of her beauty, brains, and personality, to fulfill her destiny.

Think about it … if she had been a married man, she wouldn’t have become queen. And if she hadn’t been a minority, she wouldn’t have cared about the Jews and what was going to happen to them.

So what am I saying? Sometimes what looks like a disaster in your life is part of a much bigger plan.

But you will never fulfill your destiny if you are having a pity party.

Esther could have just said, “If only I hadn’t been chosen, if only I wasn’t Jewish, if only I was like someone else.”

A lot of people do that. They live their lives in resentment, always looking at people and saying, “Well it must be nice to be them.”

If you have that attitude you will never fulfill your destiny. You have to realize that the unpleasant obstacles in your life are often God-ordained opportunities to make a difference.

It’s hard to see that when you’re in pain. Look at Job. He was the wealthiest man in the world and then God allowed everything to be taken from him – his family, his wealth, his health.

Then, when Job started asking God why, he was silent. Job said, “I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I turn to the south, but I cannot find him. But he knows where I am going … His mind concerning me remains unchanged … Whatever he wants to do, he does. So he will do for me all he has planned. He controls my destiny” (Job 23:9-10, 13-14).

You might be in a situation right now where everything is going wrong and you can’t figure it out. But God knows. Nothing in your life is accidental. The pleasures and pains, the opportunities and obstacles, God can use it all. There is nothing God cannot use for good in your life if you’ll give it to him.

Faith is not denying reality. It’s not pretending you don’t have a problem.

The biggest mistake people make when we’re overwhelmed is focusing on the problem. We don’t look to God. We put our eyes on the problem instead of God…

We have a NFL Fantasy Football league for BC Students. There will be prizes for every place from first to last (First place prize is worth $20!) OK so $20 isn’t going to make you rich but it is pretty cool. Once the field is full, we’ll announce what the prizes are. REGISTER TODAY!
